Pastor Brown’s homily* for the 11th Sunday after Trinity at Zion Lutheran Church in Lahoma, OK. As Thomas was out of town last weekend, Pastor recorded the sermon with something other than our usual equipment. The quality is not as good as the previous (and upcoming) sermons, but here it is nonetheless!
The Old Testament (Jeremiah 7:1-11), Epistle (Romans 9:30-10:4), and Gospel (Luke 19:41-48) readings for the 10th Sunday after Trinity, followed by Pastor Brown’s homily on our Gospel text at Zion Lutheran, Lahoma, OK.
As promised (hinted at?) in our most recent episode of the Count It All Joy Show, we are going to attempt to make audio versions* of Pastor’s weekly sermons available here on the website and in the Count Joy section of iTunes, right alongside our podcast. What we’ve done is include the readings for the week as well, as a way of leading into the sermon. Enjoy!
Completed 1st Peter chapter 4. Inquisition: Pastor talked about contemporary (and general) music themes; Thomas spoke on the use of literature and story themes in apologetics. Finished with groans about our mic check laxity that resulted in semi-botched sound. Sorry!
Began 1st Peter and ended up in chapter two. Pastor talked about the significance of the Augsburg Confession, and Thomas dealt with why we can still be confident in the gospel despite so many denominations (and biffs on the first commandment!).
Changed the flow from four segments to two bigger ones for this episode. Continued through James, ending up at ch.4 v.11. Thomas expanded on his answer from last week and took a question; Pastor talked about the “Christian fish”.
Continued our study of James in chapter 2, Thomas answered a question about how he’d respond to one who says “Christianity is illogical,” and Pastor answered an e-mail about facing guilt from feeling one hasn’t done enough good works.
So, we have the equipment, we taped the show… and well… we don’t quite know how to get our bump music in yet… so, um… maybe someday we will dandify this up [Edit: we now have, though it will never be as good as later episodes because, hey, we didn’t know what we were doing in the beginning!], but, well, here it is. Mostly.
Episode 1 (and hopefully better than the Phantom Menace, but maybe not) — Enjoy! Send feedback!
Tom’s Episode Description:
Segment I – Got started with our examination of the book or James, beginning with some discussion on the concept of “Antilegomena,” as well as how it differs from the idea of deuterocanonical/apocryphal sources in Roman Catholic tradition.
Segment II – Continued moving through the text of James chapter one.
Segment III – Took a break from the text to answer questions. Tom first answered a question about “what the most common reason given for someone to deny the faith” and addressed some follow up on how to go about answering objections. Then Pastor took a question regarding what he would say to the individual who avoids Church out of fear they don’t fit in. Hopefully future episodes can incorporate questions from our listeners, which can be submitted to countjoyshow@yahoo.com.
Segment IV – Wrapping up the chapter and closing thoughts on James so far.
